Glen Innes Magpies had a broadly successful Sunday beating Moree Boars decisively at the senior level and winning two of the three other fixtures against the visitors. The women now go through to the semi-finals.
At the A Grade, the Magpies ran in ten tries, including one each from Adam Morris, Tim Grob, Jake Harmon, Daniel Cheges, Brendon Blaker, Nick Say and Brandon Levy. Nick Lehman kicked eight goals. Moree scored a try and a goal to make the final score 56 – 6.
This was a convincing win against opposition who are higher than the Magpies in the competition.
“We finished the year off well,” Coach Nick Ehsman said. “Everybody stuck to the game plan.”
The Ladies League Tag side put in an equally overwhelming victory performance against the opposition from Moree. They emerged 64 – 0 victors, with Emilie Hodge putting in a particularly impressive display of running, ending up with three tries. Megg Landers and Gabby Byrne got two apiece.
Also on the score sheet for tries were Gabbi Willis, Chelsea Hiller, Tiana McDonald and Kate Fakes. Megg Landers kicked three goals, Amy Byrne and Emily Hioodge scored two each and the other goal-kicking honours went to Chelsea Hiller, Tiana McDonald and Kate Fakes.
If the ladies and the senior side had overwhelming victories, the reserve grade went down to overwhelming defeat – 16 points to 60 against. Three tries to eleven was a punishing loss.
The Glen Innes Under 18s won on a forfeit because Moree failed to field a side.
The results of Sunday’s play means that the A Grade side is now out of the running, having finished sixth.
But the ladies top the group and so go forward to the semi-finals where they meet the winner of the tussle between the Armidale Rams and the Moree Boomerangs who play next Sunday.
For the A Grade side, the season is now over. Coach Nick Ehsman said it was a reasonable season. “It’s been a bit up and down.”
He said they hadn’t expected to win a grand final.
“It’s a building phase and we’ve made a bit of progress.”
The highlights of the season were the victories over Armidale and Inverell.
