The young side were part of NSW’s top eight schools who went head-to-head for School’s Cup glory in Sydney on Wednesday.
Against teams from massive regional centres, including Dubbo and Griffith, the Glen Innes girls held their own to finish fifth in the state, the highest in recent history.
“We have never done this before, never achieved this level,” coach Julie Fuller said.
“We have six year 10s and four year nines in our team.”
Fuller said it was a massive step up for a handful of players.
“Some of these girls have never played at netball central, in that big arena, so it was a bit daunting to start off with but everybody combined really well as a team,” she said.
“They defended well, they talked which they don't do very much.
“The older girls, the more experienced ones, supported the little ones and got them firing up.
“The girls dug deep, we were very unlucky.”
Fuller said it wasn’t necessarily the result which made her proud but the way they kept getting better every game.
“Between the first game and the last game was a huge improvement, especially from some of the ones who are bit more inexperienced,” she said.
“They did really well, I am very proud of them.
“It was just some silly turnovers we didn't capitalise on for two of the games, one of the games the other team was ahead by four goals at half-time and we pegged them back and lost by one.”
There’s no slowing down in the sport with trials to play for NSW in Armidale on October 8 and Northern Inland Academy of Sport squad trials shortly after.
Fuller believes plenty of Glen Innes players could feature in the representative teams with massive depth in the area.
She said the talent in the town is showing promising signs for the future.
“Glen Innes is on the up-and-up. We are just going from strength-to-strength which is really good,” she said.
“It has taken us a long time to get there however.
“Watch this space.”
