On one side, the Anglican Church where a “no” vote is seen as the Christian way.
On the other, Nola Taylor has put up her own Rainbow banner facing Holy Trinity.
She has put bells on the flag as symbolic confrontation with the church bells (though hers aren’t audible even from the edge of her garden).
The vicar is against gay marriage, as is his Bishop in Armidale.
The Bishop sent a letter to his flock saying: “I will, of course, be voting ‘No’ to Same Sex Marriage.”
The Right Reverend Rick Lewers told the Examiner that the Bible presented marriage as between a man and a woman.
“Christian Anglicans hold to the teaching of Jesus Christ who in Matthew 19 said ‘…that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, ‘for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife’.”
And the vicar of Glen Innes Anglican Church, Rev. David Robinson, said: “Christians believe that the Bible is the word of God which reveals God's good design and purpose for his world. When expressed as God designed them, the Bible is incredibly positive about sex and about marriage. However it is clear throughout the Bible, from creation through to the very words of Jesus on the topic, that marriage is to be a life long commitment between one man and one woman.
“Christians vote no on the present postal survey, then, not out of fear or hatred for same-sex couples, but because we desire to promote and protect something that is very good.
“What saddens me in this debate is the negativity of the messages that are often put forward when the Bible has a very positive message for us. The Bible is clear that none of us has lived as God designs us to live in his world.
“The great thing is that God neither ignores this as if it didn’t matter, nor simply strike us down. Rather he sent his son into the world to die for us. He did that so that we might have our failures dealt with and so that we might be empowered to live more and more God’s way.”
