The party is making much of a website it’s got called “toomanyguns” which tells you how many firearms there are in each post code.
If you put in 2370 for Glen Innes, the site reveals that the town and surrounding area has 814 registered firearm owners for a population of 7,564 people. There are 3,996 guns, meaning each owner has on average five guns.
There is one owner in the area who is not a collector but who has 68 guns.
Glen Innes Greens spokesman, Mercurius Goldstein, said the results showed that Glen Innes was not as bad as some urban areas.
“The presence of licensed gun ownership for legitimate primary production purposes around Glen Innes and the New England region is unsurprising and wholly within NSW law”, he said.
“But people may be surprised to know that Greens count among our members more than a few licensed gun owners who, like other primary producers, have a legitimate need for the use of firearms within their property boundaries.”
He said Green gun owners were “responsible gun owners."
He said the Greens website was worthwhile because it “highlights those other areas of NSW where there are heavy concentrations of guns to no conceivable purpose. Greens only want guns in the right hands, for the right reasons."
"What the website reveals is that the Glen Innes region actually has a significantly lower concentration of gun ownership compared to some leafy Sydney suburbs which recorded owners with hundreds of firearms.
"What possible good can come of a suburban homeowner maintaining an extensive arsenal of weapons? They don't need them for cockroach control."
A spokesman for Glen Innes Pistol Club said that the owner of 68 guns was probably a dealer. The club shoots as a sport and the spokesman said the regulations on securing weapons were very strict. Some shooters had five guns but that was because different competitions demanded different sorts of fire-arms.
