The Glen Innes and District Sports Council 2013 Sports Awards have wrapped up another year, with the highest recorded number of attendees, according to joint secretary Deidre Camp, turning out to recognise the efforts of local athletes and the valued behind-the-scenes workers that keep sport running locally.

According to Ms Camp, the awards evening was aimed at recognising all athletes in the community and haling the high achievements made throughout the year.
“They are all winners,” Ms Camp said.
“The awards are about recognising everyone’s achievement.”
Awards were presented in a number of categories, this year introducing a new award dedicated to the hard work of competitors throughout the year.
A total of seven Gordon Creighton Memorial Awards were presented on the night across four categories.
“The achievements were so high, it made it very difficult to vote,” Ms Camp said,
Recipients were between Sub Junior and Junior Boys and Girls divisions, with Carter Goard, Elizabeth Chard, Melanie Symons, Sarah Byrne, Nick Crisp, Michael Alley and Jay Gallagher all taking out one of the most recent awards.
In the Squirts division, Mollie Cave took out the girl’s award, with Holly Peterson taking runner-up, while in the boy’s, Kaleb Hope took the top spot followed by Ryan McIntyre in runner-up.
Competition ran close in the Sub Juniors, with awardees closely matched, Nick Cave took out the winner’s spot, with Evan Byrne taking runner-up, while in the girls division, and Tabitha Peterson secured the top positions from a wide field of nominees, closely followed by Amy Byrne.
Madison Cook was awarded the winner’s trophy for the Junior Girls division, followed by Genevieve Whitehead in runner-up, while nominees in the boys division were near inseparable with Brayden Gallagher taking a close win, followed by Jayden Ehsman in runner up and the largest number of Gordon Creighton Memorial Awards presented in any category.
In the Seniors division, Owen Larkings and Kirstie Fuller took the winner’s podium, with runners-up Tom Williamson and Wendy Peterson.
The Col Hull Junior Services to Sport Award has entered its third year of running, recognising the efforts of younger athletes in mentoring up and coming competitors.
Ms Cave spoke highly of the efforts of each nominee and said without their efforts clubs would struggle to continue running. This year, Tay Heagney was awarded the Col Hull trophy, followed by Ebony Gallagher as runner-up.
In the senior services to sport category, Peter Leamon and Leayne Fisher both took out awards for their extensive efforts and dedication to their respective clubs.
Graeme Latham won the masters division, followed by Jeff Short in runner-up, with the Short Award presented to John Lee and Peter Leamon.
Under 12s Boys Soccer took out the Sub Junior Team award, with GIHS Under 15s Girls Soccer dominating the Junior Teams division and Jelly Beans Tug of War securing the opens teams.
Ms Camp commended all nominees on their stellar annual performance, the success of guest speaker and NIAS Executive Officer Di Hallam, and extended gratitude to all those who worked to make the night a success.
Noting the hard work that goes into the Awards, Ms Camp said the night was well received by all who attended.
