“It’s a pretty hectic schedule from now on,” Glen Innes local and head coach Kirstie Fuller said. “We’ve got a camp at PLC on February 25 and 26, which is going to be pretty cool actually.”
It will be a cross-over camp with the football and AFL squads. The AFL and football coaches will both do a session with the girls and vice versa.
Fuller said the idea is not to teach them a new sport but see how they connect and how their skills translate across different sports.
“Obviously speed and agility links into all of them and understanding space,” she said. The camp will also incorporate a media session, yoga session and a giant fitness session, where the girls will compete against the boys.
They’ll have another session in March before the Academy Games on April 8 and 9. Sunday was a part of the process to select the two squads they’ll take to those.
The hot weather did mean they couldn’t train with the intensity they otherwise might have.
“It made it much more about learning, which was a good thing,” Fuller said.
Scone’s Anna Atkinson was also named a vice-captain at the session at the Tamworth Sports Dome, while Eliza Perkins from Gunnedah was awarded the captaincy honours.
Stretching, and looking after themselves before, during and after games, were the main focuses of the session as they build towards the Clubs NSW Academy Games.
