First and second division travelled to Guyra on Saturday. Seconds started well but after 15 minutes of tough soccer Guyra opened up the scoring, leading 1-0. Guyra dominated and scored easy goals. The second half Highlanders came out fighting but a second yellow card to our striker seeing him sent from the field left our team one man short and Guyra ran away with the win 6-0. Simone Fuller-Byrne had a couple of chances to score but was denied, all players tried really hard and hopefully with training they will break through soon to record a win.

First division also had a tough game against Guyra. Being down 2-0 at halftime we came out determined to level the score, the play went from end to end with Mick Maroney scoring two dot shots as the Guyra team was getting frustrated with our attack. Guyra scored again making the score 3-2. Liam Muckenschnabel was awarded a penalty outside the box and found the back of the net to level the score. We had several opportunities to score but luck was not with us and Guyra won 5-3.
Ian Slapp in his first game with the Highlanders was awarded players’ player, backed up with strong performances from every player on the field. Although we lost, with a bit more ball control and patience on the field I see us being very competitive this year.
