Mayor Steve Toms does not believe there’s any great desire in Glen Innes to change the date on which Australia Day is celebrated.
He was speaking after a council in Melbourne came out in support of changing the date from January 26, the anniversary of the First Fleet landing at Port Jackson in Sydney. Opponents of that date argue that it is the anniversary of an invasion after which the indigenous population suffered the destruction of the way of life they had known for millennia.
Mayor Toms said: “I don’t think it’s an issue here. There’s always an on-going sensitivity but locally it’s dealt with as sensibly as possible.
“I haven’t detected any great angst about the date so far.”
