There were the traditional readings and renditions of the Last Post but also testimony from the family of local people who fought and died in the “war to end all wars”.
This was said of the Purvis brothers: “Alfred William Alexander Purvis enlisted in the Australian Army on the 29 May 1916 and embarked from Sydney on the 17 November of that year.
Alfred served in the 33 rd Battalion, 9 th Australian Infantry brigade, 3rd Australian Division in France, and was discharged from the Army on the 18 th of September 1919.”
“Alfred’s eldest brother, Donald, enlisted on 19 September 1914, and served in Gallipoli, where he was wounded.
On 20 April 1917, he rejoined his battalion from hospital and went on to serve in France.”
“On September 22, 1917, he was killed in action at the Somme.
