Every Thursday between ten and 30 people come for nutritious and tasty food. Many are poor people and some come for the companionship.
Brenda Beauchamp who manages the Community Centre said: “The weather affects it a lot. If it’s really windy or wet, fewer people come.
“People don’t only come through poverty. They come to bond with people. they come for company”.
Thursday’s offering was devoured – peach and apple crumble and zucchini and bacon slice.
To pay for the meals, the Opportunity Shop on Lang Street gives $2,500 a year for which the Community Centre is grateful.
One of the people on Thursday had only been in Australia from Shanghai for barely a week. Peaches and apple crumble were an early taste of Australian taste – and kindness.
