But taking pictures that capture the whole atmosphere of an event is the really hard part.
But that’s what Kat Blackwell tries to do at concerts – and succeeds at.
“I wanted to capture the buzz to remember that buzz when I’m not there”, she said.
She takes pictures at concerts, pretty well concerts of any kind of music (apart from classical). So good is she at it that she won the Popular Freelance Photographer award at the Tamworth Festival. It’s given by acclaim, the artists and the fans voting for their favourite – in this case, Kat.
Like lots of the best photographers, she likes to be unobtrusive. She doesn’t get special front or back stage passes but stays in the crowd of fans.
But her pictures are so good that artists have noticed and commission her for album covers, like the Australia country-rock artist, Col Finley.
She does it for love more than money – she still has a job in TSG on Bourke Street (the Shop in Glen).
“I love music and I love supporting independent and up-and-coming artists”, she said.
“Sometimes, people say ‘come and shoot’ but I started because I love music.”
She’s been doing it for nearly twenty years now – and the thrill hasn’t worn off.
