William Yang was born and brought up in Australia of Chinese parents but spent the first twenty or so years of his life denying his Chinese heritage. He looked Chinese but felt Australian.
People would refer to him as though he were a Chinese student visiting Australia and he wouldn’t disabuse them of the false impression.
But then he decided to explore his background and ended up going to China many times – and there he felt Australian, even as he looked Chinese.
So his show here will be about himself – “I really just talk about myself” – but actually other elements, too, including his photography.
He also intends to talk about the rich Chinese heritage in this area.
His show is in Glen Innes on March 13 and Tenterfield on March 11. He’s in Armidale on March 16.
