After forfeiting their round one game against the Barbarians, the Elks ran out at home to take on Robb College for a round two encounter. The Elks finished on the wrong end of a 44-7 scoreboard but showed glimpses of promise in their first game since their split from Guyra after last season’s joint venture.
Former Elks president Jim Ritchie took on the sideline referee’s role on Saturday and said despite only one being scored for the home side, there were encouraging signs for the Elks throughout the clash.
“We almost crossed the line on a couple of other occassions there,” he said.
“Todd Burgess ran an inside line and nearly crossed the line but was pulled up short.
“Even though the score was what it was, they got a couple of good tries against the play, but the boys never gave up the whole time.
“They really worked well together considering they were a put-together team that hadn't played much together.
“It was very close in the fact that they just missed out with some good defence in getting a couple of tries which would have made the score more respectable.”
Ritchie was optimistic about the side’s chances this season and believes they could upset a few teams throughout the year.
“Once they get their act together and understand each other and put a bit of commitment into going to training, I think they will end up being a pretty handy team,” he said.
“The forwards did a great job, they did some terrific ruck work, pick and run and that sort of thing.
“If they can stick together and put a bit of commitment in I think they will be very competitive throughout the season.”
The Elks travel to Armidale this Saturday to take on St Albert’s College for round three.
In other Elks news, the club have put together a social media campaign to raise funds to renovate their clubhouse and for a rural charity.
On their Facebook page, the club have posted and Elks Eligible Bachelors status featuring Ranald Burridge.
If the post reaches 1000 likes, the Elks will do a nude calendar to raise the funds.
