The Hawks have held the edge over the neighbours and rivals in recent years but this time around, Glen Innes took a comfortable win 28-10.
Magpies coach Gavin Peterson said the side’s work on their attack paid off in the game.
“I suppose we have just been working on our ball movement really,” he said.
“That was what stuck out in our attack, the way they were shifting the ball was really good.
“The most pleasing thing for me was their [Glen Innes’] defence.
“Inverell scored the first try early on and then we held them out for the rest of the game so that was the most pleasing part.”
Peterson said taking the win on Inverell turf was a “bit unexpected” but was elated to finish with the two points.
“I knew it would be a tough game but it was probably the best game we have played for a long time,” he said.
“We will use that as a blueprint with how we will play for the rest of the year.
“There is not much else I would like to change, they pretty much executed everything to plan.”
