Glen Innes continued their form from their previous clash and rocketed out of the starting gates for the opening 4”0 minutes.
The Magpies put on 34 unanswered points before Inverell crossed minutes before half-time for the score to be 34-6 at the break.
Disciplinary errors saw the visitors add just six points in the second stanza but the damage was already done as Glen Innes finished with a 40-18 triumph.
“In the first 40 minutes everything worked well,” captain-coach Nick Say said.
“It was probably the best 40 we have played all year.
“Everything we talked about, worked – completing our sets and playing field position.
“We defended well too, everyone was working as a unit so it was really pleasing.”
While they soared early, Say said the late stages of the game soured an otherwise outstanding performance.
“It was just a bit disappointing in the last 20 minutes, we lost our way a bit,” he said.
“A bit of discipline came into it but there were plenty of positives to take out of it when you win like that.
“That's the main thing.”
It was also the first time Magpies hooker Guy Mepham faced his former club.
“They tried to stir him up a little bit but it didn't worry him too much,” Say said.
“I think he just let the footy do the talking.
“He was happy with the result.”
A long history of rivalry between the neighbouring towns made jagging three wins across all grades that much sweeter for the visiting club.
“It is one of the best wins of the year really, if you can do it over there. It was a good day for the club,” Say said.
“It doesn't matter how you win, whether you win by one point or 30, it is always good to go over there and get a win.”
The Magpies will be on the sidelines for round six with a scheduled bye before returning to the field in Tingha on May 19 to play the Tigers.
“It helps our injuries. We didn't get any injuries on the weekend but a few of the boys who do have injuries, it just gives them another week off and freshens everyone up a bit,” Say said.
“We have a bit of a roll on but a week off won't hurt us.
“And then we come back and we get Tingha.”
