Five years ago, there were public meetings. The trees, it was alleged, would have birds doing what birds do., and on the citizenry of Glen Innes. There would be less space for loading vans. it would cost money.
As the Examiner reported at the time: “Further community objection was raised on the loss of parking spaces in the CBD and the reduced size of centre parking spaces to a minimum of 2.6 metre widths and the movement of loading zones.”
In the current Autumn glow, one councillor remarked that change was always opposed.
Visitors seem to love the trees at this time of year. Two motorbike tourists admired them. Michael Jennings from Boonah on the Gold Coast said: “The trees are beautiful.
“I love coming here just to look at the trees. We could probably grow them where we come from but they wouldn’t be as beautiful as this because of the winters up here. That’s for sure.”
