This Saturday will mark Old Boys day with the minor league and senior clubs joining forces for a day’s worth of rugby league.
The junior Magpies will be facing Inverell while the seniors take on the Boars.
Glen Innes Old Boys president Gavin Peterson said he is expecting a crowd to form and reminisce about their glory days.
“The day this week is a bit of a celebration of Magpies past, present and future,” he said.
“We are going to get our members up on the hill and have some photos and scrapbooks, people are going to bring old jerseys, have a yarn about a few old stories.
“We have got 70 registered members of the club at this stage, most of which have indicated they are going to come.
“There are a few others who aren't members but will come and join on the day if they want to, or just be there.”
Old Boys from interstate have indicated they will make their way to town for the inaugural event.
“We have a couple of people from Brisbane and the Gold Coast coming down, I think there is one from Coffs Harbour and the rest are pretty local,” Peterson said.
“We are just really looking forward to the day and hopefully the weather holds out.
“Generally the talk around town is there are a lot of people who are looking forward to going so I think we should get a pretty good crowd if the weather is kind to us.”
The Old Boys formed late in 2017 and have had a positive response.
“We are really happy with how everything is going,” Peterson said.
“We are still in the early stages of setting the foundations of the club and aren’t trying to do things too fast.
“We are just trying to keep things as a social aspect at this stage.
“We are happy with the membership numbers we have got, we have our t-shirts done up.”
The club have been working towards a goal of raising funds to inject back into the local community.
“We just support local charities and young sports people that go away and represent the town,” Peterson said.
“When they incur costs for travel to go to state carnivals and all that sort of stuff.
“Through raffles and everything else, we are nearly at a stage where we can start getting that money back out in the community and people can see that by supporting us, it is going to a worthy cause.”
Minor league games against Inverell begin at 9am with the under 8 and under 6 sides. Senior league clashes against the Boars is expected to commence at 12.30pm with the league tag followed by under 18s.
A grade set for 2.45pm.
