Former World Farmers' Federation president Graham Blight is Torchbearers' guest of honour this Friday

AGRICULTURALIST: Leading world and Australian agriculturalist Graham Blight will speak in Glen Innes on Friday night.

A champion of the Australian agriculture industry will speak about his encounters with the great and famous this Friday night.

Graham Blight, former World Farmers’ Federation president and a stalwart of government and business committees, will be the guest of honour at Glen Innes Torchbearers for Legacy’ annual fund-raising dinner, at the Glen Innes Service Club.

Mr Blight will speak about how his meetings with world leaders had local, national, and global effects.

Mr Blight was a former trade representative and adviser on agricultural matters to the Federal Government. He was President of the National Farmers' Federation from 1991-1994, President of the World Farmers' Federation from 1994 – 1998, and and consultant to the World Bank in 1998. He was also President of the Ricegrowers Association of Australia for nine years.

He was awarded a Centenary medal for his contribution to Australian society and government.

On Friday night, Mr Blight he will speak about his meetings with former US president George Bush Snr on his 1992 visit to Australia, the Pope in Rome, and Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.

He will also talk about how he worked with Australian prime ministers Bob Hawke, Paul Keating, and John Howard.

He lobbied the UN, reminding them that farmers were the one group the world could not do without. After all, they fed every single delegate three times a day!

Torchbearers raise funds for Legacy, which helps military families suffering after bereavement.  It cares for 65,000 widows and widowers and 1,800 children and disabled dependents in Australia.
