John Charles Truscott was born 1842 at The Quay, Truro parish of St Mary. His father John Truscott then was a servant in Tywardreath.
Later, the 1851 Census describes him as a retail brewer and retailer of beer in Pydar Street.
In June 1869 aged 26, John Charles arrived in Melbourne on the Gresham where he was stated to be a miner.
On April 8, 1870, he married Elizabeth Kinsman (nee Coad), a laundress at Creswick, Clunes, near Ballarat and became a stepfather to Bessie Kinsman. Almost immediately they returned to Cornwall.
In the 1871 Census for the parish of St Agnes Cornwall, he was recorded as farmer of eight acres and aged 28.
Elizabeth, 22, was recorded as an innkeeper, and five-year-old Bessie was a scholar.
Family records also suggest they had a boarding house in Truro.
The second son, Charles Thomas was born in 1872 and Sidney Austin (Jim’s grandfather) in 1875, both at Blackwater just outside Truro.
After his parents died in 1874, maybe John Charles inherited the Pydar Street business and sold it, giving them the finances to return to Australia.
On November 8, 1877, they left London and arrived in Brisbane on February 4, 1878. Bessie was 12, John Henry was 6, Charles Thomas 4, Sidney Austin, 2 and Orton Ernest Truscott was an infant.
Family records say John Charles and Elizabeth came out to Australia for him to work on the railways but they soon established a general store in Texas in Queensland, then moved to Deepwater and then on to Emmaville.
The 1894-95 electoral roll listed John Charles and his son John Henry as storekeepers in Moore Street, Emmaville.
John Charles and Elizabeth had another seven children in Emmaville.
A reunion of Truscotts now living in Queensland, WA, NSW and VIC will be held in Emmaville on Christmas Day 2018.
