The Highlanders took on minor premiers Inverell to land the grand final on September 22 in what ended up as an extra time thriller.
The home side landed the first goal after “a suspect call from the referee.”
The Highlanders fought hard but Inverell scored again after defender Konnor Ferris was pushed off the ball into keeper Dan Leabeater to let them in with the referee not noticing the incident.
Glen Innes started the second stanza 2-nil down but Jeff Miller got them back on track with a penalty goal.
Mick Moroney scored the goal of the year with a bicycle kick to level the score to 2-all.
Unfortunately the Highlanders scored an own goal to give Inverell the lead.
Good defence from Mike Nyathi gave Mick Moroney the chance to level the game up.
He made no mistake and the game finished 3-all and went into extra time.
Fifteen minutes each way of extra time saw Inverell score and win the game 4-3.
Thanks to their second-placed finish at the end of the regular season, the Highlanders have another shot at making it into the decider.
They will play The Armidale School at home this Saturday in the do-or-die encounter.
