The target of “hostilities” was the coveted Col Davidson Trophy which is the symbol of bowling supremacy between the two clubs.

Tenterfield took a bus load of bowlers to Glen Innes with four teams of Triples primed for battle.

However, Glen Innes changed the previously agreed format at the last minute, insisting on three rinks of Fours.

Undaunted by the Glen Innes tactics, Tenterfield regrouped and took to the green.

After 21 ends of fiercely contested bowls, Tenterfield emerged the victor.

The rink skipped by TBC’s Neville Richardson drew with Glen Innes’ Robert Rees, Bryce Titcume’s rink had a handsome seven shot win over Bill Newberry and our Shirley Tribe won a thrilling game over Isobel Dawson by scoring a 6 on the last end to win that rink by one.

Well done ladies to secure the trophy in such a dramatic fashion.

The camaraderie displayed by all players was a testament to the respect for the bowlers from both clubs.

Gentle sledging was the order of the day with jibes such as “A good neighbour would put that bowl in your pocket – you’ve already got one shot”. 

The bus trip home was a jovial one with remembered shots becoming more skilful and less fortunate than they perhaps were.

Overall, we enjoyed that most satisfying feeling of a job well done and mission accomplished – the trophy back in Tenterfield hands, at least for the next 12 months.

As neighbouring clubs, we support each other’s carnivals so we look forward to continuing the rivalry at Tenterfield Australia Day weekend carnival in January.
