Riders came from across the state and from Queensland to compete against our local riders, with many successful local results.
Local Glen Elgin Competitor Ben Thompson claimed not one, but two wins, taking out the Novice B and the Open Campdraft on One More Chance, along with many other placings. The local onslaught continued in the placings for the Open Draft with Gloria McCormack, John Matthewson, Ben Thompson, Nick Cave and Phillip McCormack all in the top 6 placings.
Another young local, Nick Cave won the Maiden Campdraft Pool B on his horse Playtime.
Lachlan Maxwell narrowly missed the win in the Novice A Campdraft, while
Ben Lomond competitor, Phillip McCormack, won the Cut-Out prize in the same event.
Swan Vale competitor and local Glen Innes Pony Club Chief Instructor, Codie Law, took home a swag of prizes including first, second and highest cut-out in the “Celtic Cup” Open for Open Draft, as well as the cut-out prize in the Open Draft.
Young rider, Kate Moorhead, from Ben Lomond proved successful winning the cut-out prize for the Maiden A Pool.
Local 15 year old, Tom Matthewson, secured the “juvenile draft’ win with a high score of 90 on his horse Gold Tone, with locals Sam Donnelly and Hayley Lynn also in the placings. Pinkett rider llyssa Newbury narrowly missed the top spot in the Junior Draft, placing second behind Myles Williams from Delungra.
The Junior Rodeo on Saturday night was very popular with the largest number of competitors in the Under 8 Poddy Ride – seeing all the future cowboys in their best chaps putting on a show for the strong crowd.
Local Matthewson boys, Tom, George and Jimmy are owed a big thankyou for their efforts in the running of the Junior Rodeo, along with Luke Bennett and Wade Brown who donated their horses and rodeo gear for the Station Buckjump. Thanks also to Peter Kelly and Stephen Wells – the pick up men ensuring competitors were safe.
The Buckjump was a key feature of the night, with participants getting in the spirit and dressing up as Batman, the Hulk and even Santa.
This year’s Campdraft and Rodeo was made possible with the support of its many local and regional sponsors including major sponsor Coopers Tires and Tyrepower. Local transport companies Taylor’s Livestock & Heavy Haulage and Namoi River Meats Livestock also worked huge hours transporting the 1,200 cattle to and from the venue.
