The Northern Inland Academy of Sport’s season has just begun with their induction day and a huge contingent of Glen locals make up the playing squad and coaching ranks.
Bridgette Beatty, Annaleese Cameron, Maddison Cooke and Sophie McCormick are in the squad while Julie Fuller returns as assistant coach, Tayla Fuller is a trainee coach and Rebecca Cooke and Mishka Dowling are team managers.
The NIAS squad will head to Sydney next month for their high performance camp where coaches and players learn from some of the best in the state.
Then they will turn their attention to the Academy Games in April.
Liz Chard has also been included in the NIAS squad after her and Emily Burton earned selection in the NSW Regional Talent Squad.
The squad is chosen after hundreds of under 17 and under 19 netballers trial for state teams. The teams are announced and then 26 more are included in the talent squads after being identified as having potential.
The talent squad keeps them in the pathways and gives them access to professional strength and conditioning programs.
Glen Innes High School netball teams are also preparing for the coming School’s Cup opens and under 15 events with the final selections to be named in coming weeks.
The Glen Innes Netball Association will be one of the first in the state, and the only one in the North West region, to begin walking netball.
As part of the NSW Seniors Festival, a handful of associations are joining in with come and try netball days.
Glen Innes are set to host their own on Thursday from 9am at the showgrounds.
Walking netball is a modified version of the traditional game and is played at a slower pace.
Julie Fuller is hoping it will gain momentum in town and plans to expand the program for its health benefits in the future. It is aimed at encouraging people to be introduced to physical activity and improve motor skills and coordination.
Glen Innes Netball is also recruiting players for regional league, which starts in Narrabri in April, the National Primary Games to be held in July in Tamworth.
