Craig Pevitt could have had no idea his afternoon photographic session on Sunday, with property owners on Dumaresq Creek, would lead to the reporting of very old World War II military weapons in the form of an Italian Carcano carbine and the longer Japanese Arisaka rifle.

Craig said the weapons were found by his 10-year-old son Dax and his partner Tia.
"I was actually taking photographs of the property owners for their engagement," he said.
"Tia took our three kids for a bushwalk and they were walking through the creekbed when my eldest son found the first rifle.
"He was leading the expedition, apparently, and he saw some wood that looked smoother and more polished than the rest of the creekbed, so he went and picked it up and it turned out to be a rifle."

"The bolt actions are very rusted and I would be surprised if the firing pins were still intact. You couldn't get into the housing unless you cleaned them up and they would be very delicate operations," he said.
"I would say they have been in the creek for some time."
With the police yet to complete their investigation, Craig said he could not help wonder how the weapons came to be there.
"We're waiting on what the police say," he said.
