With no bench players, the Elks ventured down to Alcatraz and scored a 29-15 triumph over the Baa Baas.
Coach Sam Price said his side "played exceptionally well."
"We only had 15 players so it was always going to be a bit of a challenge," he said.
"The cricket grand final was postponed because of the wet and it was on so there was three or four of the guys in that."
Price put the win down to ball control with the aim of minimising their time defending their line.
"We held on to the ball really well," he said.
"The first-half in the first game we turned over a lot of pill and spent a huge amount of time in defence and that wore them out whereas the boys held on to the ball really well.
"When we did have the ball we utilised it pretty well to get some points.
"We tried to limit the amount of silly turnovers we had.
"With 15 players we tried to do as little defence as possible because it is always harder."
While they were good with the ball-in-hand, Price did lament the number of penalties the Elks gave away but said their defence held up most of the time.
"We gave away a number of silly penalties," he said.
"On the back of our mistakes the Baa Baas were very good at utilising those opportunities to put points on the board.
"Offside penalties back-to-back gave the Baa Baas a pretty easy try."
The Elks are back at rugby park this Saturday to face Robb College.
Price is hoping for more players to turn up to training to build on their recent performances.
"Hopefully we can field a good team and stay competitive the whole season and build on what we did the week before," he said.
"We have given a number of penalties away this year just being offside at the breakdown.
"A bit of it is just the guys being really keen but we are giving away a lot of penalties there.
"If we can cut out some of that out of our game that can make a big difference.
"We were much more settled with the ball in hand this week than we were last week so we will just keep building on it and see how we go."
Price is expect the students to show plenty of razzle dazzle.
"I am sure they will be strong and competitive in the forwards and have plenty of pace out wide," he said.
"The Baa Baas forward pack was quite huge, they had quite a large forward pack.
"I wouldn't think Robb would have quite as big a forward pack, I would expect them to be a bit faster out wide."
