The Magpies' day started disastrously.
Before they had even hit the road, three players withdrew from the match.
The Magpies were left with 13 to take the field until a late call-up for under-18 duo Dale Smith and Jamie Kliendienst saw them pull together 15 for the clash.
"It is not the easiest thing to do, being a junior and coming over there but they didn't look out of place anyway," Say said.
"Both made their debuts over there which is tough."
Within 15 minutes of the kick-off, the Magpies were dealt another blow with captain-coach Guy Mepham injured, leaving them with 14.
Jamie Watts stepped into the hooker position and Luke Berger took on the goal kicking, of which he nailed six from six.
Berger's boot proved the difference with the Boomerangs and Magpies both scoring seven tries apiece, including a hat-trick to Watts, but Glen Innes landing every conversion attempt, giving them the 42-38 win.
"You lose Meppo in the first 15 minutes and he is the captain of the side and one of the best players in the Group," Say said.
"You lose him after 15 and you think 'oh God, could this day get any worse?' but then a few positional changes and everything just worked out."
Say "couldn't be prouder" of the tenacity shown by his side.
"Just courage and a lot of heart," he said.
"Take grand finals away from it, but I reckon that is one of the best wins I have been involved in.
"The team effort out there was unbelievable.
"Just the heart they showed for the jersey, the town should be proud of them really."
Say had never won at Burt Jovanovick Oval.
"I won at the old ground but not at the new one and that has been six or seven years," he said.
To go out there like that, and to win like that, was unbelievable."
Both teams were undefeated heading into the clash but Glen's win puts them firmly in top spot on the table.
The Magpies head to Armidale this Sunday to face Narwan.
As for who will turn out in the top grade, Say and Mepham have a dilemma if their previously unavailable players are back on deck.
"It is a hard one, you have got to show them a bit because they have done the trip out there," Say said.
"We will work it out.
"We will see who is going to play and how everyone pulled up and who is available this weekend.
"It is a good problem to have anyway, a bit of depth about so we are sitting in a pretty good spot."
Narwan have recorded one win for the season but haven't been far off the pace throughout the opening five rounds and Say is expecting a tough road trip.
"They are always hard down there," he said.
"It doesn't matter where you are playing, they are always a tough side.
"We have just got to keep that momentum going, we don't want to just slack off from this win."
