Greg Lockwood, 75, has dementia and heart disease but made it all the way to Roma before being picked up by police and sent home.
The family of Mr Lockwood asked police to search for the man after he went missing on Sunday morning. Greg has a heart condition and did not have his medication. He also has early onset alzheimers.
He was discovered after he used a credit card at a business in Roma and police picked him up on Monday at the house of a local he'd befriended.
His family was concerned for his welfare over such a long drive. The trip is over 18 hours.
Roma police last night took him to Roma hospital, which is where he is currently convalescing. A family member is currently travelling to Roma to pick him up.
It's understood he was heading to Townsville to see another family member.
