Heather was to marry another well-known school teacher, Alistair Cox on December 23 that year.
She acted in Arts Council productions, was a member and vice president of the CWA Evening Branch and was a part of the Public School Mothers Club.
At the annual prize giving reported in the Glen Innes Examiner , December 11, 1959 it was noted that RV (Dick) Lennon was the headmaster of the (then called) Practice School; Miss L Swan was headmistress of the Girls Department and Miss Nan Mellings was headmistress of the Infants Department. Mrs S Whyte was president and Mrs Jamieson secretary of the Practice School Mothers Club, and Mrs Schmidt was the president of the Infants Mothers Club.
That prize giving took place on the lawns in front of the main school building with the entrance steps used as a stage for a number of performances - the Flute Band accompanied by Mrs Winifred Marsh, Speaking Choir led by Mrs F Moroney and Boys Choir conducted by Mr. George Kerr.
