Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said he wants to get that number uo to make NSW a more friendly place for people with disabilities, as part of a state campaign to encourage more venues and events to become Companion Card affiliates.
Some 30,000 people across NSW hold the cards, which allow the carers of people with significant and permanent disability to have free entry to participating venues and events like museums and concerts.
The member for the Northern Tablelands said many businesses across the electorate already do a great job supporting people living with a disability, but he said more could be done to make everyone feel included.
"People with disability should have the same opportunity as everyone else to participate in our community," he said.
"I did a quick search of the Companion Card website and while there are many businesses and facilities in our region which are already participating in the scheme like the Armidale Pool and Majestic Cinema Inverell, there is a huge gap in communities like Warialda, Uralla and Moree.
"I urge all recreational businesses across our region to sign up to become an affiliate today and show their support to people with disability and their carers."
Just two events or businesses that service Glen Innes are current affiliates, with the only local affiliate the Australian Celtic Festival.
Busways Heatherbrae, based near Newcastle, is another affiliate of the card system marked as operating in postcode 2370.
Armidale has six affiliates, including the Regional Council, the local cinema and the Saumarez Homestead.
There are zero affiliates in Uralla or Warialda and just two in Moree (an art museum and the Australian Theatre for Young People).
"This is also about being a good corporate citizen and helping people with disabilities to live life to the fullest," he said.
"Across NSW there are more than 30,000 Companion Card holders and I would love to see more of our local businesses take advantage of this significant market.
"The program has been helping people with lifelong disability participate in their community for more than 10 years, by providing free entry to events and activities for family members, friends, volunteers or paid carers."
Companion Card affiliates include entertainment venues, health and fitness facilities, transport organisations and more.
Card affiliates must accept any card holder from any state or territory as well as NSW card holders. The cards are only available to people with a permanent disability.
