The Elks managed to post a 22-13 victory over the Magpies to claim the first spot in the August 17 decider at Armidale's Bellevue Oval.
"It was good defence all the way through, it was a good game," Elks coach Sam Price said.
"We probably just capitalised on the opportunities that presented themselves better."
The last time the Elks took on Tamworth, they missed out on a win but Price said they had cleaned up those weaker areas.
"We retained the ball at the breakdown much better than we did the last game against them," he said.
"They beat us a couple of weeks ago and they really dominated the ruck.
"It really affected how we could set the platform for our outside back whereas this game we tended to rotate the ball a lot better. When we did get the ball out wide we opened up pretty good opportunities at times."
The place in the decider is a bonus for the Elks who have made the last two seasons about rejuvenating rugby union in Glen Innes.
"As a club we are just stoked to field a team every week and everyone have fun and we have ended up in the grand final so it is a great result for us," Price said.
As for who they will face in the grand final, it will be a battle between Tamworth and the Armidale Blues for the spot. Price isn't sure of who to tip.
"It could go either way, both teams are really strong in the forwards," he said.
"The Blues might do them out wide a little bit.
"The last game we had against the Blues they were pretty quick out wide as well and I just wonder whether that will be the difference between them in Tamworth.
"That might be the difference.
"I am sure it will be an excellent game this weekend and we look forward to taking on whoever is successful."
The Elks have built their season on defence and are aiming to improve on cutting down errors in the lead up to the big dance.
"If we just clean up a bit of our discipline and some ball security we can do well," Price said.
