On January 24, 1970 - The Land of the Beardies History House Museum and Research Centre opened in the former hospital building.
Hospital secretary Archie Weir, mayor Eric Potter and shire president Barney Brennan worked together with the society to obtain the complex for which the society originally paid a peppercorn rent.
The building housed a preschool kindergarten and some art classes after the new hospital opened in May 1956.
Later the organisation became The Land of the Beardies Reserve Trust and has always been responsible for all the upkeep, maintenance, and insurance etc. of a large complex, the earliest wing built in 1877.
We are planning a huge day on Sunday, January 26 to celebrate the golden anniversary of the opening of the museum.
The Australia Day ceremonies will be held here as well as a day-long historic Village Fair with numerous attractions including early children's activities and hopefully a car rally.
We are looking for expressions of interest from people selling or working on early crafts, demonstrations of early trades, music, food stalls, entertainment etc.
It is planned to all be under the cover of a large marquee, and ask that stallholders all bring some kind of shelter so whatever the weather, all will go ahead.
Exceptional teamwork over 50 years has built the museum into one of the best in regional NSW and a loop of pictures on a TV in the courtyard will portray these people and the progress.
We ask for anyone with photographs to please bring them in to be scanned so that the portrayal of people, preparations for displays, exhibitions, functions etc., will be as comprehensive as possible.
A highlight will be the opening of the Jeannie Ross Fraser Memorial Medical Wing and there will be other new displays within the museum etc.
We hope the whole of Glen Innes and district, and those who have been involved over 50 years, will visit on the day. There will be much to see and do. Wear a bonnet, a weskit - come in costume.
