Alec Eastwood and Blake Hahn, year 11 and 10 students at the Glen Innes High school, will participate in the 2019 NSW Public Schools State Drama Ensemble at the end of the month.
The duo will spend a week in September developing a performance they will perform in Sydney's Seymour Centre in October.
"For me especially I'm starting my HSC drama course next term so I think just going down there will be a really good learning experience, give me lots of schools," said Alex Eastwood.
"It'll be just another level of stuff that can I can learn about and do."
The two-night State Drama Festival won't be their first performance together, with the younger Blake stepping in to fill in for Alex's end of year group performance at school.
"Our fourth member didn't show up on the day. So Blake had to step in and learn the entire piece in a couple of hours!"
Entrants for the state drama ensemble have to perform a two minute monologue, plus submit a written application for the role. The chosen few are told by email if they're selected.
Blake performed a dramatic reading by the character Doctor jekyll and Mr Hyde. Alec described his character as a fish, manic depressive sentient fish that dies at the end of the brief monologue.
Alec Eastwood said he was over the moon when he got the news.
"There's not a lot of kids who get into it, it's fairly competitive," said Alec.
"I was really happy and surprised that I was able to get in."
He credited watching his older sister study drama in year 9 with his interest in the subject.
"I sort of saw her having a lot of fun with it and I always wanted to give drama a go.
"And I did it in year 9 and I just really loved it, so it did it again in year 11 and 12."
