Set 194 to win, the top order of the Tigers was unable to build any sort of meaningful partnership to help out Corinne Hall, and fell to 5-94 after 25 overs.
Erin Fazackerley and Hall finally started to put some pressure on the Western Australians with a 43-run stand that came to an end when Fazackerley's run-a-ball innings of 27 was halted.
From there it was left to Hall to do the bulk of the work, but her resolute innings of 55 from 93 balls was halted by a caught and bowled attempt from Sophie Devine, leaving Tasmania 9-177.
The innings ended six balls later in the 44th over when Samantha Bates was run out.
Earlier in the day, Tasmania's bowlers all produced economical figures after captain Brooke Hepburn won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Belinda Vakarewa, who was one of four players on debut for the Tigers alongside Maisy Gibson, Emma Manix-Geeves and Bates, was the pick bowlers, finishing with figures of 3-27 from her 10 overs, while Gibson and Meg Phillips claimed two wickets each.
Western Australia's innings was helped by a 93-run stand for the fourth wicket between Nicole Bolton (63) and Megan Banting (46).
Tasmania's second WNCL game is on Monday against host state Queensland from 9.30am at Souths District Cricket Club.
