The Book Market is now housed in the building.
Before the bank was built, a huge tent was erected on the site in the early 1930s and a Fromelles veteran, Mr, later the Reverend, John G Ridley MC of WWI preached to large crowds at a Christian mission." (From Land of the Beardies, History House Bulletin Vol 40, June 2013, p.5.)
This resulted in the formation of the Baptist Church in Glen Innes with a foundation list of 39 members.
The first service was held in the then Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows Hall demolished when the Main Roads Department built on the corner of Grey and Ferguson streets in early 1970s.
The first full time minister was the Rev Samuel Lane (father of the late Rev John Lane).
Open air meetings soon became a feature, sometimes shared with the Methodist community. These were held at Timbs Pharmacy corner or opposite the Town Hall.
Soon Lot 20 of what was then known as the Clarke Estate was bought for £180 and architect Peplow prepared the plans for the Baptist church free of cost.
The site was levelled with horse drawn ploughs and voluntary labour and the church was completed only six weeks after church secretary Mr Bacon's tender of £610 was accepted.
It was opened by Mrs Ridley on August 18, 1932.
"Following the first business meeting in the Church 29 September 1932. It was noted that the Pastor (Rev S Lane) 'be granted one month's leave as his presence was required in Sydney to fulfil an important engagement."
While the minute does not amplify the important engagement, those who were here at the time recall the fact that about that time Sam Lane went to Sydney and married Freda Varne." (From Glen Innes Baptist Church Golden Jubilee Celebrations 8-9th November 1980.)
This building now houses 2CBDFM radio station as the Baptist Church, now called the Crossroads Church, has moved to the corner of Cross and Church streets.
