They say he entered a shed on a property on the Gwydir highway and siphoned fuel from a quad bike into a jerry can.
Police are searching for a man with a thin build, 165-170 centimetres tall, of Aboriginal appearance. They say he was wearing a light coloured hat, t-shirt and long pants.
The are encouraging anyone with information about the incident to call the Glen Innes police station on 02 67329 799 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
