Club President, Evan Brown says a particular purpose of the shoot is to give hunters who may never have shot at a formal range, the opportunity to have a go at target shooting, with the view to boosting numbers in regular club matches.
Also, the day will give the club some experience in holding such an event in preparation for hosting the NSW SSAA State Service Pistol Titles early in 2020.
The chosen competition for the day is a called a 'Goat Shoot', involving scoring on paper targets at distances which will test abilities to make ethical shots when out in the field hunting.
The shooting positions allowed are also of the kind a hunter would be required to use out in the scrub, rather than bench-rest style shooting used in most club target competitions.
There will be a competition for .22 rimfire hunting style rifles with targets set at 100 yards, and another for centerfire rifles at 300 yards, with trophies for each.
An overall 'Top Goat' perpetual trophy, for the marks-person with the highest combined points is also waiting to have its winners name added as the first on it, in what is hoped to be an annual New England Highlands shooting event.
Also, trophies (with bonus prizes donated by local gun stores) for junior and female shooters will be handed out on the day, and a prize of a hunting spotlight is up to win by entry draw, from all shooters who attend.
The event is open to all licensed shooters, and there are options for those who do not yet have a firearms licence to shoot, so that as many people as possible can try out target shooting with the SSAA Glen Innes Branch.
Details of the shoot, (including how to obtain a firearms licence to enjoy safe shooting sports through the SSAA) can be found on the club website - ssaagleninnes.org.
Alternately, you can find out more, or put your name down for a place at the shoot, by calling the Goat Shoot organiser, Wayne, on 0400 573 231.
