Twenty-four people participated, shooting both rimfire and centerfire rifles, on targets designed to promote ethical and safe shooting, and especially to introduce hunters to target shooting with Sporting Shooters Association Australia clubs.
Almost every shooter employed the 'prone' style of shooting which is considered the most steady method of aiming a rifle in those conditions.
Even though the day was run as a fun 'try shooting' event, there was much interest in the scoring on the targets as they came back.
Club President, Evan Brown tells us that the 'Goat Shoot' target-shoot day also met its goal of introducing new people to the Emmaville range, which is a valuable asset for shooters in our community.
As well as local Glen Innes and surrounds participants, visitors travelled form as far afield as Wollongong in NSW and Ipswich in Queensland, and from Tamworth, Narrabri and Mudgee in the more 'local' area.
As such, the day was a small test for the club in having visitors to the range, prior to it hosting the SSAA NSW State Service Pistol titles early in 2020, and the Australian International High Power Association later in that year.
The club wishes especially to acknowledge also the support given to us by local businesses in advertising the event, including local firearms dealers, NAP Firearms and Grey Street Spare Parts, who donated prizes for the day.
Scoring and places and prizes were however not the main focus of the event, (full results can be found on the club's website ssaagleninnes.org ) but rather to give firearms owners, or those thinking of taking up Safe Shooting Sports, an opportunity to enjoy a day of fun, but challenging range-based target shooting.
On those terms, all who attended said the day was a success, and have said they will be back for the 2020 event.
The club hopes to make the next Goat Shoot event a little bigger than this year now that they have tested the idea, and a date will soon be settled and advertised.
