Rotary satellite group chair Terry teVelde this week granted a dozen Glen Innes students from every school in the region a $50 gift card each.
He said the voluntary organisation wanted to recognise students who had shown leadership, the spirit of volunteerism and been willing to mentor others.
"I think most students are pretty bloody good," he said.
"It possibly is part of a conduit between young adults and more senior Rotarians."
Schools choose the recipients. They could have picked another twenty students, he said.
"I think a word you'd use for kids generally is functional. You just want a functional kid - you don't want a robot."
The students were issued a voucher at a ceremony on Monday at the Services Club. It's good for $50 of books at Schaefer's newsagency.
