The former English teacher who switched to heritage protection in the 80s and spent decades lecturing at the University of New England, will serve as this year's ambassador.
The Australia Day Ambassador Program, which is billed as capturing "the true spirit of Australia Day", encourages links between communities across the country.

Each local government area is assigned its own ambassador, a prominent person from the sporting field or the science lab, government or the stage or screen. Their primary job is to deliver a speech about the meaning of Australia at events across the state.
Glen Innes' 2019 ambassador, Sonia Gandhi, came to us all the way from Sydney after immigrating from India.
Graham served for many years as a heritage advisor to the former Armidale Dumaresq council, the former Guyra shire council, Gwydir shire council and Uralla shire council and the now Glen Innes Severn council. He retired from the University of New England in 2000.
