A vehicle police suspected was being used by an escaped prisoner from Glen Innes jail was actually stolen by an unrelated duo, police allege.

Officers arrested the two men in Moree yesterday after a dangerous pursuit and with the assistance of the police helicopter and the dog unit, police said.

Police yesterday said they suspected Selim Sensoy, 44, was making his escape in a stolen red Subaru. A large scale man hunt continues for the man, who was reported missing from Glen Innes Correctional Centre on Saturday.

The Subaru allegedly failed to stop for police patrolling Edward Street just before 11am.

Police took off in pursuit, but the chase was ended a short time later, due to the safety risk of alleged dangerous driving.

The car was recovered with the help of the police helicopter and the dog unit on the northern bank of the Gwydir River, police said.

Two men aged 44 and 50 were arrested.

But Selim Sensoy, 44, wasn't among them.

The two men were charged at Moree Police Station and refused bail to appear before the Moree Local Court today.

The older man was charged over three allegedly outstanding warrants. The younger man was charged with a number of traffic offences.

Sensoy is described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, is between 175 and 185cm tall, with a medium build, and brown eyes and grey hair. He was last seen wearing prison greens, but police said they do not know if he has changed clothes.

He was last seen wearing prison greens; however, it's not known whether he has since changed clothes.

Sensoy is from Prospect in Sydney, but also has connections on the Mid North Coast of NSW, and South East Queensland.

Police urge residents not to approach the man, but appealed for public help tracking him down on Saturday.

An escaped prisoner on the run from the Glen Innes jail is believed to be travelling in a stolen car.

Police are conducting a "large-scale" man hunt for Selim Sensoy, who escaped from the minimum-security Glen Innes Correctional Centre on Saturday.

They said the 44-year-old man may have stolen a red Subaru WRX from a Glen Innes home.

The vehicle was last last seen in Moree about midday on Sunday, police said.

Police had earlier appealed for public help tracking him down.

New England police have appealed for public help tracking down a prisoner who escaped from the Glen Innes jail on Saturday.

Selim Sensoy, 44, was last seen in the minimum-security Glen Innes Correctional Centre at 10am on Saturday before being reported missing at midday.

New England police are now conducting a manhunt for Sensoy, and have appealed for public help tracking him down.

Police have also released a photo of the escapee, and have warned the public not to approach the man.

He's just the latest prisoner to escape from the minimum-security prison in recent years.

In May last year, a prisoner spent nearly a week on the run before he was recaptured by police walking to Grafton.

Another male inmate escaped in January last year.

And two prisoners, who escaped in October 2018, were arrested after a dramatic police chase in Armidale.
