The New England town was the coldest place in the country, with the mercury dropping to minus 9.7 at the Bureau site at the town's airport. Apparent temperatures got as low as a Siberian minus 14.5.

The Bureau also measured a minus 9.7 in 2012. But the record for the coldest August day was set in 2008, with a punishing minus 12.8.

Tamworth also has shivered through its coldest morning of the year, with records tumbling around the region during a record cold snap.

In fact, the freezing minus 4.7 degrees recorded at the Tamworth Airport at 3.19am this morning is the coldest August temperature in seven years, according to local weather observer David Farrenden.

Mr Farrenden said Tamworth last measured an August morning below minus 4 in 2017.

Before that the Bureau of Meteorology site recorded a minus 5.2 morning in 2013.

With windchill, apparent temperatures this morning sank as low as minus 8.

Mr Farrenden, the owner of the Tamworth Regional Weather page, said the cold snap is probably already over.

But he said conditions are gathering that could see another smattering of snow. The Tamworth region has already received snow in 2020 so far, in June and August.

"There's another cold pull that's coming in this low pressure tomorrow," he said.

"This low pressure system will come over and it will cool the place down no worries about that, and we'll start seeing a few frosts after it.

"There is a slight chance that we may some snow, but it's sort of borderline at this stage.

"If they do get down to the temperatures that they need to get down to to get snow, it will snow."

He said if it does snow it will snow on Sunday night to Monday morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology currently predicts a moderate chance of snow in the Barrington Tops and Nundle, with a lower chance in the New England highlands at Guyra.

Armidale measured a low of 4.6 per cent, with Gunnedah hitting minus 5.2.
