Jessica was one of two students from Glen Innes High School who competed in the 2020 Northern Tablelands LLS Property Planning Competition.
Fellow year 11 student Hannah Dunn also competed in the Property Planning Competition, which has been running for 23 years. This year's focus was absentee landholders and technology.
Hannah and Jessica both individually entered in the competition with amazing plans they had devised for 'Brookfield', a property east of Guyra.
Both students individually completed their property plans that included a five-year budget and general property plans, taking into consideration biosecurity, legal obligations, and what that enterprise needs to do.
Due to COVID-19, students were unable to complete some tasks, including farm visits, that would have had a significant impact on their successful property plan.
"It's normally a field day for the the students to go out and see all the different functions of running a property in the real world and look at the aims and goals of the landholders, and then create a property plan with their own ideas," Northern Tablelands LLS senior land service officer farm planner at Johnelle Stevens said.
According to the judging panel the standard of the entries was outstanding despite the lack of a farm visit and without consultation with LLS experts due to COVID-19.
"The entries were fantastic, and outstanding considering the limitations," Ms Stevens said.
The Glen Innes students competed against six other schools during the competition.
In an amazing show of her property planning abilities, Jessica was announced as reserve champion for the competition, during the presentation ceremony at UNE SMARTfarm on Wednesday, October 21.
Attending officials praised the students' conduct, knowledge and understanding on the day.
Both Hannah and Jessica participated in pasture assessment utilising new technologies and saw an overview of the technologies in place at UNE SMARTfarm.
Agriculture teacher Jodie Lamph said it is great to see the students succeeding in their studies.
"For Jess to get reserve champion on her own against groups is an amazing accomplishment," she said.
