Golf memberships in NSW have seen a dramatic increase this year and our region is no different.
Across NSW, memberships in regional clubs have increased by 4.2 per cent.
Glen Innes Golf Club is no different with their memberships increasing by nearly 15 per cent.
"We got about 27 new members and we only had 200 [members] initially," Glen Innes Services and Golf Club manager Pat Lonergan said.
"The other thing that increased is the numbers for our rounds, we have been getting a lot more golfers in our competitions than what we usually were.
"It has been really good, COVID certainly was a big help to golf because it was one of the things they could play."
Neighbouring town, Armidale, has seen an increase of 39 per cent in memberships.
Their secretary-manager Rhys Porter said combined with the fact golf was one of the only social outings available during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, it is one of those sports that once you give it a go, you can get hooked. Lonergan agreed and believes a lot of new members will stick around in the future.
"The good thing is too is a lot of them were younger ones. They couldn't play football or whatever. I think we have got most of them hooked now," he said. The flow-on effect has also seen golfers return to the Services Club post their outings on the green. This in turn benefits the community through various sponsorships.
