Mr Barratt has been a member of the NSW SES for 33 years. For over 20 years he has been the Controller of the Deepwater Unit and more recently the Glenn Innes Severn Local Controller.
Commissioner Dent said that Mr Barratt had made a significant contribution to the safety of the community of Deepwater, the wider Glen Innes Severn area and the entire community of New South Wales.
“As a leader and an endorsed SES trainer in many areas including Road Crash Rescue, General Rescue, Chainsaw, Storm and Water Damage as well as First Aid, Brian Barratt has been a major influence in ensuring that NSW SES volunteers are well trained and highly motivated,” he said.
“Mr Barratt has been instrumental in ensuring that the NSW SES Deepwater Unit retained a strong rescue capability and he also played a significant role in the Deepwater Unit becoming a Community First Responder for the NSW Ambulance Service.
“This service enables the Deepwater SES Unit to respond specially trained and equipped volunteers to local medical emergencies pending the arrival of an ambulance from Glen Innes, Tenterfield or Ashford depending on the location of the person requiring attention.
“Over the years Mr Barratt has lead numerous local teams to other parts of the state to assist in emergency responses.”
Mr Barratt said that over the years he had been fortunate to work with many wonderful people, within the SES.
“I have also worked with good people from the Police and other emergency services and they have all contributed to me receiving this recognition,” he said.
“I am very pleased and humbled to accept this award.”
