Statistics show an alarming 95 per cent of people who start a weight-loss diet fail to lose weight and keep it off.
Some people gain more weight every time they start a diet. This can be devastating and result in a negative cycle of yo-yo dieting and self-loathing.
If you have been among the 95 per cent of people who have failed on a weight-loss journey, the first step I recommend you take to finally transform your life is to identify the things that are making you fail. This will ensure you are aware of the challenges you will face and can take steps to overcome these challenges.
The top five reasons that most people fail on their weight-loss journey include:
Not having a clear plan
Starting a new lifestyle without a clear plan to follow will most likely result in failure. Following a plan or I like to call it a system will assist you with taking the crucial steps that are required to support you every single day and to assist your strength, willpower and motivation.
I have a detailed system that I follow every single day and I tick off each action from the moment I wake up in the morning to the very end of each day. I have finally found the best system that works for me and my lifestyle and that I can easily and consistently stick to because consistency is key.
To find a plan (system) that suits you seek guidance from a health professional.
You lack health and fitness knowledge
When it comes to health, weight loss and fitness, knowledge is power and very important for your new lifestyle. The world is fighting an obesity epidemic and I believe one of the contributing factors is that many people don’t learn about healthy eating, exercise and a balanced lifestyle before starting a diet. Without knowing the importance of nutrition, exercise and general health; weight loss hopefuls will find it hard to know what steps and actions to take each day.
I recommend researching online, reading books and blogs, acquire guidance and tips from health professionals.
No supportive environment and influencers
Have you heard of the saying “you become who you spend most of your time with”? Have a look around you, are your friends and family supportive? Are they encouraging and positive towards your goals and success?
If you answered no; it’s time to distant yourself from those who don’t contribute to your health and life quest. The circumstances and environment that surrounds you. The vibe and atmosphere that surrounds you can make or break you. To feel inspired, motivated and driven, you need positivity and happiness in your life.
Going too hard and being too restrictive
In my eyes, this can be the biggest culprit. I have seen it too often with my own weight loss journey and also many other who have failed many times and finally came to me for guidance.
Starting a hardcore and gruelling training program causes the body to ache unbearably and the mind will feel overwhelmed. The first two weeks is bearable and many will feel great at first. Some even partake in a very restrictive eating plan at the same time which can cause even more destructive outcomes. The human body and mind naturally avoids pain and cannot upkeep rapid and hardcore activities.
I recommend setting realistic goals, seeking guidance and only set out on a realistic and enjoyable program that you can upkeep every day. Otherwise the cycle of yo-yo dieting will defeat you once again. Remember consistency is key.
Not seeing the new lifestyle change as a lifestyle but as a short-term fix
This is more common than you might think. Many people start their weight loss journey with the mindset that their diet will only have to be endured for a certain amount of time or until they lose the weight, then they can go back to their usual lifestyle.
This is such a toxic way to think when it comes to weight loss, health and fitness. When I was 115 kilos, I can remember thinking like this. It wasn’t until I shifted my focus and beliefs that I could truly change.
It should not be weight loss that is the important aspect of life. It’s the lifestyle that you lead every single day that is important. Once you have your daily lifestyle sorted out, you will start to see results with your weight loss, mind and body.
