Racing since 1857, the 161-year-old race club has been punching well above its weight of a one-day-a-year race club, according to president Mark Ritchie.
More than 3000 people attended the 2018 Glen Innes Cup Meeting and this weekend’s cup meeting to be held on Saturday is set to host similar crowds.
The club has upgraded a number of facilities at the track including extensive refurbishment and maintenance work carried out on both sand and grass tracks; upgrading some stabling; lifting the roof in the tie up area and upgrading fences.
“We are expecting a great turnout for the 2019 Glen Innes Cup and some competitive racing across the day’s program,” said Mr Ritchie.
“It is a super fun day out for the entire family so come along and enjoy a real country race meeting. International Party Crew will be providing the entertainment after the race day activities conclude and are a great dance and party band.
There will also be nearly $3000 worth of prizes up for grabs in the fashions on the field competitions. Children will be judged earlier in the race meeting with the couples, men’s and ladies being judged straight after the last race. Fleece to Fashion Awards organiser Liz Foster will be judging fashions on the day.
Fashions organiser Navanka Fletcher said: “There are usually over ten entrants in each category, most popular categories are couples and the lady categories which see over 20 entrants. Of course the categories everyone wants to win is most elegant lady and best dressed contemporary lady. There are some stunning outfits entered in each of these categories.”
Local trainer Paddy Cunningham has nominated 12 horses from his stables for the six-race program. Two of these are entered in the cup race - last start winner, Redraw, and Lovetime, which finished third in its last outing.
Super Cooper is a promising entry in the class 2 Plate Race and Mylastgeegee, nominated in the Maiden Handicap, ran second by just a nose in its last run. “Local punters are very supportive of Paddy's horses and hope that there will be at least a couple of winners amongst them,” said Mr Ritchie.
