"Over the century Glen Innes has achieved the distinction of producing a long line of horse breeders and horsemen of note.
"Fine horses have been bred on 'Wellingrove', 'Rangers Valley', 'Shannon Vale', 'Balaclava', Abbey Green', 'Kings Plains' and 'Dunvegan'.
"At the pioneer show of Glen Innes, we read of Pat Anderson of 'Newstead' leading the field in horsemanship although the field and its equipment appears to have been rather primitive....
"The high jump at the first show was won by Campbell and Gibson's grey gelding Eclipse, runner up was Gibson's hurdler, Sir Roderick.
"Campbell and Gibson were at that time owners of 'Wellingrove'.
"The Dickson boys from 'Kingsgate', Tommy McPhee and Donald McIntyre handled the rough ones, bred mostly on 'Byron' which had No. 1 reputation for buck jumpers, followed by 'Shannon Vale' then owned by T G Rusden.
"At the second show 'Kings Plains' came into the picture, winning the high jump at 5ft 8in. Over a fence with a rail on top.
"The rail carried the bark and the horse had the unusual name of Bullock.
"President of the show committee was Dr Fraser, secretary James Martin assisted by Pat Anderson, John McGregor, John Sinclair and Christopher Legh.
"Glen Innes held its first independent show under the leadership of W.A. Dumaresq.
"Here we read of Finlay McInnes taking the championship ribbon for his blood stallion.
"For years he maintained a record of many champions. 'Marouan' was to see the tradition carried on by Jack McInnes, Charles Scholes and Edward Cousins...
"Fred Curtis was also a breeder of prize-winning stock, both stock horses and hacks.
"He carried the champion draft more than once with the well-known 'Sandow' competing against AM White 'Bolivia', JF White 'Shannon Vale', Archie Turnbull then owner of 'Guy Fawkes', J McMaster 'Newton Boyd', Col and Len Mott 'Glendon', Bruce Winn Ebor and W Cregan 'Moredun'...
"Bruce Winn was one of the best horsemen this country has been privileged to see, his career as a horseman began in Glen Innes where he won his first draft riding his uncle Bill Turnbull's Comet."
