“We had 140 kids last year and we fitted them in one night,” Coordinator Karen McAllister said this week.
“We’re looking for kids from all ages. It goes from totties all the way up to high school.”
Youngsters looking to try their hand at the sport are invited to come along. The club is run largely as a non-competitive skills development, but Karen said there is room for some healthy competition among the older players.
“We’re not classed as a competition because we only run as Mini-ball,” she said.
“It’s more like learning to catch the ball, bounce the ball, more coordination kind of thing.”
“Last year was the biggest high school competition we have had for a long time. We score them and then have a presentation at the end of the year for the team that won the most games.”
“We are thinking of doing that more with the little ones this year as well because some of them are getting quite competitive.”
Age groups commence from three years and are divided into three groups. Ages three to six years will focus primarily on motor skill and coordination development, with groups in the six to nine, 10 to 12 and 13s and over playing in more structure game situations.
Registration costs are $25 for Aussie Hoops (3-6 years), $35 for juniors (6-9 years) and for seniors (9-12 years) and $40 for high school players. Teams will be formed over the school holidays for a tip off May 6 for the competition which will be run on Wednesday nights, Karen said.
