The competition invited schools from all over the New England and North West to enter their art works with the chance to be hung in the New England Regional Art Museum during the University of New England Schools Art Prize exhibition.
Zoey won $300 with her art work being kept by the gallery.
Other Glen Innes High School Students Dayna Hourn, Molly Campbell and Chloe MacPherson al had art work chosen to be hung in the gallery too.
Out of 700 entries only 60 are chosen for the exhibition.
Dayna received a director’s choice award and Molly received a highly commended.
Zoey said the judges told her on the award night, July 17, that her painting was very expressive and done really fast.
“They liked the style and said it looked like a 20 year old’s work,” she said.
Zoey based her painting on her HSC Art Major of an abstract head/face which is painted with ink and acrylics.
Zoey’s abstract painting is to do with control and so when she started painting it she was blindfolded.
“It’s pretty crazy, really exciting to be put into the exhibition,” Zoey said.
“I’ve never really done anything like that before.”
Dayna based her entry on her HSC Art Major on endangered animals a bright watercolour painting of a snow tiger.
Dayna was very happy with her director’s choice award.
“All of us got hung out of 700 entries which is really cool,” she said.
Chloe entered a photogram, a black and white collage featuring the Eiffel tower and Molly entered a blind contour drawing with watercolour.
Both in year nine, Chloe and Molly were both very excited to be chosen to hang in the exhibition, with it being their first time entering the competition.
All the girls wish to extend their thanks to NERAM and Miss Sparks for her help through the year.
Art Teacher Abi Sparks was very proud of all her students.
“We are a small school up against a competition open to everywhere,” she said.
“I’m really pleased how we do at the show.
“They are a very creative bunch.”
“This is a great opportunity for the girls to get their art work into a regional gallery.”
Zoey and Dayna complete their HSC later this year and Molly and Chloe are continuing with their art studies next year.
