The call came just before one o’clock on Saturday when a fire started on the race course quickly jumped the New England Highway.
A statement from NSW Fire and Rescue (Sation 302 – Glen Innes) said: “Crews arrived on scene and with a fast moving fire, were tasked by RFS crews on scene to make entry into a property along the Ten Mile rd on the eastern side of the New England Hwy to commence fire attack on an advancing fire.
“The fire which had started on the Deepwater race course was fanned by a moderate westerly breeze and quickly jumped the highway and was heading for a farm house and sheds and was burning precious grazing land with also stock in danger.”
It took fire crews and the local land user utilising a tractor and plow two hours to bring the fire under control.without any loss of property or stock.
The highway was closed in both directions, with no alternative north-south route, while the fire raged.
The Glen Innes brigade statement said: “The fire burnt out around 115 hectares of grazing land and three hectares of Deepwater’s golf and race course”.
Captain Earl Sharman of Glen Innes fire brigade said: “People need to be very aware when they are lighting fires. It was very dry”.
He said the recent rain may have eased the danger somewhat but care still needed to be taken.
